SF Musicians Help us See Into the Future

Overall, in this project I explored the ways in which woman musicians used music as a medium to create works of feminist speculative fiction. The science fiction concept albums released by Japanese Breakfast and Janelle Monáe employed tools of narrative, lyricism, and music production to engulf listeners into a new world. Both artists used the science fiction concept in order to inspire listeners to enter their new worlds, or envision ones of their one, where kinder realities are possible.

The reason these albums are so important right now is because while the world we are in continues to make progress to become kinder for all who inhabit it, sometimes other aspects make get worse, or positive progress is be reversed. I hope that these albums give listeners hope in their times of struggle, and show them that they are not alone in their hardships.

I hope that in exploring my project, audiences can discover some inspiring new music, see women of color succeeding in the music industry, and begin thinking about what their own idea of a kinder world would look like. Perhaps, one day that world will not be so far away.
